CMS Law Seminar: Co-location of Storage and Renewable Generation

This week we were invited to the seminar on the co-location of storage and renewable generation organised by our trusted partners CMS Law.

We found the quality of the panel discussions to be extremely insightful. Below are some of the key topics discussed:

- The case for co-location: cost-sharing benefits, reduced losses in the eventuality of constraints on export capacity, and revenue diversification.

- AC Coupling Vs DC coupling – Being the “standard” model it’s usually easier to get financing and insurance in place for AC coupling. However, DC coupling can provide cost benefits and is attracting investors.

- The case for Retrofitting: With the saturation of the grid on new connections, it makes sense for large asset owners to think about increasing capacity on existing operational sites.

- Foreign markets with interesting outlook: Spain, Italy and Poland.

- Long-duration batteries (>2hrs). Current price movements in the UK don’t reflect a business need for a longer duration. However, this could change with zonal pricing. A business case for >2hrs storage exists for co-location with solar and EV charging or for energy constraint management.
