Lower 48 Energy Barton BESS

Lower 48 Energy has acquired the development rights for a ready to build 45 MW/90 MWh project in Preston with energisation scheduled in Q1 2025.

Lower 48 Energy intends to reach a Final Investment Decision by January 2024 and would start construction soon thereafter.

The BESS solution would utilise LFP chemistry of Lithium-Ion Batteries and comprise of 46 Container Units with 8 inverters, 8 transformers and a substation. The entire solution would be contained within an area of 2 acres.

The Point of connection is at 132 KV transmission line connecting Penwortham and Blackburn. Penwortham Substation currently is highly constrained and will undergo upgrades before accepting any new major connection onto it. Current expected timescales take new connections to 2033 and beyond.

The area benefits from existing high hedges and trees which screens the development from apparent visual impacts. The location is in close proximity to M6 motorway and therefore has an excellent access during construction phase of the project.

Once energised, the project would hold the capacity to store and supply 66,000,000 kWh of electricity annually which is equivalent to supplying 22,750 households as an enabler technology for renewable generation and as a replacement for gas peaking plants.

The project would help reduce 17,500 metric tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere by substituting for gas peaker plants.

The BESS would be structured to participate in all the possible energy markets including ancillary services, wholesale trading, and balancing markets.
