Lower 48 Energy Glenapp BESS is a 200 MW, 400 MWh BESS project of strategic importance located adjacent to Moyle Interconnector. Moyle Interconnector is a very important 500 MW interconnector that connects Scotland to Northern Ireland.
Lower 48 Energy Glenapp BESS would connect to a new proposed Substation ‘Lower 48 Energy Glenapp BESS’ that would in turn be connected to Carrick and Mark Hill Substations. Carrick and Mark Hill Substations form part of the network that connects Moyle Interconnector. Lower 48 Energy Glenapp BESS thus would form part of this strategic circuit.
Lower 48 Energy had applied for the grid connection in January of 2023 and after a series of engagements and discussions with National Grid and Transmission Owners, we received the full offer from the National Grid ESO for an energisation in 2028.
Since then, we have worked up a land deal with the landowner to accommodate 200 MW BESS for a period of 35 years with an option to extend for a further 10 years. We have engaged with our Planning Consultants to start constraint mapping and pre planning studies.
Lower 48 Energy aims to complete the environmental, landscaping, and other relevant studies and the required consultations within the next 12 months so that a full application can be filed in Q4 of 2024.
Lower 48 Energy Glenapp BESS Project would explore options for optimising revenue through commercial contracting with Moyle Interconnector and Glenapp Wind Farm, storing energy in times of excess generation and discharging electricity in times of distress, thus enhancing system efficiency and improving shareholders’ returns.
The BESS site was chosen as it is well connected via A77 and is naturally well screened from the public line of sight. The area under option is >7 acres and is a relatively flat field that is ideal for siting a BESS project.
