Lower 48 Energy has acquired the development rights for a 100MW BESS at Bradford West. The 275kV transmission connected project is set to energise in Q2 2026.

The site will connect to a new bay in Mesh Corner 2 at the National Grid Bradford West Substation, located just 300 meters (two fields over) from the proposed site. The 7-acre site will be accessed through Stephenson Road and include 100MW of advanced Lithium-Ion Batteries, a 275kV transformer and all the appropriate MV skids, switchgear and protections. Located in the low grounds near the substation, the site design incorporates extensive landscaping to minimise visual impact and integrate seamlessly with the surrounding environment.

Lower 48 Energy has been advancing the project efficiently, collaborating closely with National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) and the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to meet the required compliance milestones in line with the grid offer timeline.

Once energised, the BESS will have the capacity to store and supply approximately 146,000,000 kWh of electricity annually, equivalent to powering 50,333 households. By replacing traditional gas peaking plants, the project will contribute to reducing approximately 38,889 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, playing a key role in decarbonising the UK's energy infrastructure.

The project prioritises safety, adhering strictly to National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) guidance for battery energy storage systems. The design incorporates robust fire prevention and mitigation measures, including engineering provisions for adequate water supply, state-of-the-art fire detection systems and two independent access routes for emergency services. All plant and equipment have been selected in strict accordance with NFCC safety standards, ensuring best practices are upheld throughout the site’s operation.

The BESS would be structured to participate in all the possible energy markets including ancillary services, wholesale trading, and balancing markets.
